My Jabez decided to call himself George later in life. Can't say that I blame him for that, though!

An Olde Crone Report 24 Nov 2004 02:07

My problem is just the opposite. I have TWO Briggs Holdens (yep, Briggs), both of whom married a woman called Peggy Harwood! What is more, both Briggs Holdens fathers were called Thomas, one married to Sally Yates, the other to Sarah Yates. No, they are not a mistake, they all have distinct and different births, marriages and deaths, but I'm getting the children muddled up........

I believe the queen's childhood name was Lillybet. "The Queen sends a telegram to each British citizen on their 100th birthday. She did send one to her Mother, signed "Lillybet", so Lily is quite possible I suppose.

Oh yes, I've got the same, but just about sorted. Gifford - ooh I thought, unusual should be easy to find - no, he called himself Sidney. The others are: Ivan- Frederick Mary Annie - either Annie or Mary Agnes - Amelia Beatrice - Bella Elizabeth - Ada Sarah - Kate Loveday -ooh I thought another easy one - no, she called herself Grace Alice - Nell George - Stan Charles - Bill As for GGG grandmother known in the census as Amelia - she wasn't born, nor did she marry, and so far hasn't died!! Even my dad wasn't born with the name he was known as!! He was adopted at 14, when gran re-married and dad changed ALL his names - luckily I got it out of him!!! maggie

Dad was always known as Edward Reginald and signed all legal documents in this manner. back in the 60 he needed a passport but hadn't a birth cert so sent off all the details and had a big shock when a letter arrived saying "we have no record of a Edward Reginald born of this place and date but we do have a Reginald Edward". I also have a cissy who's name was Elizabeth. A snowdrop who's real name was Dorothy Hilda, and an Aunt Queenie who's name was Victoria.

My grandmother is recorded on the censuses and in family lore as (variously): Alice Roma Harris (I thought this was a mis-hearing / mistranscription, but my cousin tells me, not so) ???? I have yet to track down her birth cert. Christine

Elizabeth

Elizabeth Report 22 Nov 2004 21:09

Irish Granny (my greatgrandmother) was always known as Tilly. I found a Mathilda Jane on the Irish records of births for the right county (they have an unusual surname, so know that its the right family); her daughter, my aunt confirmed that her mother's name was Mathilda Jane...yet on Aunt's wedding certificate (she was a minor) her mother is given as Catherine Mathilda. Two mothers? too confusing?!?!?! Wish I'd found this little gem of a problem out BEFORE dear old aunt lost her marbles, bless her! Liz
