Sylvie, The National Archives website gives some explanation of the information on these medal index cards. The numbers are the Army Medals Office references, and will denote the page of the particular medal roll that his entitlement will appear on. These medals were not distributed until some time after the end of the war (I have a copy of the receipt for my grandad's medals and it is dated 25/6/21). These index cards are for campaign medals - that is they are earned by being in a particular theatre of war at a certain time and for a certain period. They are not gallantry medals, so awards of the MC or MM would not appear there. I do not know what retd stands for, but I doubt in this case it means retired. I guess it possibly means returned, but it is pure speculation. Ian

I understand most of it but am intrigued by an entry that says BW x VM retd, CRV 442/B - 23/8/22 - 7268 at (C) I uncerstand the British War and Victory Medal bits but does 'retd' mean returned and is that the date it was returned and why would that have been done so long after the war and what do the other numbers and letters mean? There is a lot of confusion around this chaps military service (for instance if he won a MIlitary Medal would it be on this record?) I need all the help that I can get - pretty please! Sylvie
