any particular reason why people kept their own names and their partners?

1) Maiden surnames are preserved to prevent them dying out. 2) Maiden surnames are preserved to comply with a request - usually to ensure a legacy comes to you. 3) A child is born before the parents' marriage and so is known by both surnames. (This can be carried down through several generations) I suspect there are several other explanations as well. Brenda

Louise I was always told, if a person had a double barrel name, it was because, they were born the wrong side of the blanket, so, ending up with mother and fathers name. I don't know how true this is, but I do laugh to my self when I see these posh people who tend to think they are better than us, as they have a bigger houses, bigger income etc, as I think, at least I KNOW who my ancestors are lol good luck.........Lilly

My mother's surname was added in front of my father's because she was last in the line of her branch of the family. I have handed it on to my son, so hopefully the name will keep going. It really has nothing to do with snob value, as I rarely use it. I have it on here because hopefully others will contact me because of it. I can assure you it doesnt mean you are posh!

When my daughter was getting married 12 years ago, she wanted her husband to be, to take her name of Tyler, he wanted her to take his Brough. So in the end they compromised and double barrelled it he wanted it Brough-Tyler but our daughter won with Tyler-Brough. Catherine

I have a double barreled first name, Ann Marie, so decided to drop the maiden name when I married. Ann Marie Lovell-Frowd is a bit pretentious sending i think!
