I am looking for a family member who left Scotland for Australia in the early fifties. Are there any ships lists for that time period? Is there a similar website like 1837 or Scotland's People where I can check for a death records as he would have more than likely passed away by now. I also have no idea yet where in Australia he may have settled. Any help or advice on this would be most welcome as I have not done any research yet in Australia. Regards Margaret

Hi Margaret Welcome to the dark side of searching, all the states have their own records & i wouldn't think 1950 or later is searchable if it is they charge even for no result, check for thread on shipping to Oz,really the first thing is to find where he was in Oz. John.

Hi Margaret. Our records here in Australia, differ from the U.K. Inward Immigrant or Passenger Shipping records to Australian Ports start roughly from 1800s to 1940'ish.( on Line ) Try this URL and it may help you understand our Records here in Oz. You can make Enquires, but you need to know (Exactly, including much red tape after 1900s) who you are looking for. Our Shipping recouces departments will not do a blanket search for you, and it can be very expensive. National Archives of Australia. http://www(.)naa(.)gov(.)au/ I can help with Deaths up to 1985 in Victoria ( only.) If you think that the person is still living, you could try our Australian White Pages Directory. http://www(.)whitepages(.)com(.)au/wp/busSearch(.)jhtml Remove the ( ) brackets. Cheers. Tony Oz.

Hi John and Tony, Thank you both for your prompt reponses and advice. I will try all of those. I have tried the phone book but too many to choose from - R Deakin (Ralph Morris Deakin). As he was born in 1912, I am presuming that he has passed on. Thanks again. Regards Margaret

Wow Tony. How did you do that!! Looks like a strong possibility. Those two names together makes it a not very common name. There are only 3 listed on the current UK electoral roll. Where is STK? How do I go about getting a copy of that certificate. I also believe that he may have gone on his own which could explain why there are no parents names listed. The informant might not have known. Regards Margaret What a luck it was in Victoria:o))

STK is an abbreviation for St.Kilda, outer suburb of Melbourne Victoria. ( along the Coastal region of Melbourne.) Maybe lucks a fortune!! I thought i would just do a quick search for you, as N.S.W and Victoria are the larger Populated States in Australia. There was only One Ralph Deakin ( Death .) out of hundreds of Deakin Surname. It was just a chance, and the Birth date was close. ( a Possibilty maybe?) You could contact the Victorian B.M.D. register, and quote the Death Reg, Number, to make an enquirey. http://www(.)dvc(.)vic(.)gov(.)au/bdm(.)htm Remove the ( ) Brackets. Cheers. Tony Oz

Ooops. Forgot to add. Margaret, Australia has a 100 year Privacy law ( as most Countries ) If you are after a copy of a Death Cetificate, after 1900 there is much red tape. You would have to prove, without a doubt, that you are next of Kin. Otherwise i am afraid that you may have a problem getting it. Cheers. Tony
