Hi Helen, I agree with you, I need to dig a lot deeper on this one, the average Ag labs lived hand to mouth, I need to search the missing twenty years, between the censuses thanks for you help.......Lilly

Hi Brenda, What a brillant idea, about the Will, never thought of that, I have no information between 1841 and 1871, I just thought it was a big class jump from ag lab to farmer in those days, as two daughters were living on fathers processes and they had a servant, so he must have done something right lol. thank you very much for your help......Lilly

I think it unlikely that the average ag lab ever made enough money to buy property to use as income. I only have one instance in my family of someone who was an ag lab. My mother had his will and he left a lot of property - I recently found out that his wife was a farmer's daughter and he had inherited her property when she died. nell

Hi Lilly Ag labs cover a wide spectrum of people in 1841. He may have been a husbandman or a tenant farmer who worked hard. Do you have occupations in 1851 or 1861? I certainly have tenant farmers in 1841 who are property owners by the 1860s. Could "rep" be "ret" or "ret'd" for retired? If you haven't already done so, have you looked for a will? If there is property, there almost certainly will be one. Brenda

Hi Can any tell me if/what the different is between a ag Lab and a rep? farmer. 1841 census states father as ag lab. On 1871 census daughter's occup is a 'rep farmers daughter?' living off Income from rents and dividends. did father buy land maybe after working it and made a tidy sum ? any suggestions welcome. thank you........Lilly
