Family History Societies do have indexed copies, but for their own counties only. They have not done an indexed copy for the UK, so for example you may well find that the FHS in Durham will have completed an indexed 1841 census for Durham county only and will not include the surrounding counties but it is worth googling the Family History Societies to see. If you have many ancestors in Durham it is also worth joining the Family History Society at a cost of appox £8 per year and you usually get a lot of help this way. Janet

If you live in the vicinity of an LDS library you can order a film in. They have parish registers, census, probate, in fact all sorts of things available that can be ordered from Utah. The best thing is it only costs a few pounds/ dollars. Failing that you might consider getting in tuoch with the local genealogical society to learn about their library holdings. Good luck with your research, Alison

As far as I know it is not online yet. ancestry.co.uk will be covering 1861 next year I think. It is always worth doing some websearches as there are a few local census sites online i.e. where someone has transcribed a village etc. You buy many 1861 censuses on CD-ROM from S&N. Of course this will not be name indexed but you might find that someone like the FHS has indexed it - websearch again. Also try asking on some message boards and mailing lists for the area. Often you will find someone who will do a lookup. Have a look on GENUKI etc and you might find that there is someone listed who is willing to do lookups. Martin
