Hi , Is it possible for anyone to do a lookup for me in the NSW and Victoria directories. I would like to see if Charles James Barry is listed in them from 1888 going backward to 1871. He was a steward in 1888 he maybe listed as a mariner? Asking a lot I know but would very much appreciate any help Thanks Victoria

When last in Adelaide I searched sands and mc dougall Sth Aust directory for Charles James BARRY working back from 1888 1885 Barry- charles master mariner Glanville (which is pt Adelaide way) only problem is My C J Barry was a steward and not capt of ship. Barry Charles storeman southwark (I don't know where that is of hand) 1884 Barry charles storeman southwark then no mention of them again. there is a Barry Charles J (Barry and co) Hill St north adelaide 1886, 185,1884,1882, 1881,1880,1879,1878,1877,1877,1872and 187, 1873 but these aren't him I wouldn't think as for electoral rolls when did they start in Sth Aust or Aust? Thanks Victoria

Hi Victoria. Some help, to maybe narrow down your search for your Charles Barry. From what i can read of your threads, you are trying to find your Charles between 1871 and 1888 when he married in Port Adelaide. Some suggestions. S.A would have Directories like Victoria. If Charles married in 1888 in S.A, go to your local Library. ( they would carry Directories.) Usually Micro Fiche, or now on c.d. Look at the 1887 Surname Directories under BARRY. If he was in S.A in 1887 he may be listed. If you find him on the 1887, then work backward's 1886, 1885, 1884, ect, ect, towards 1881, or until you cant find him listed. If he is listed on the 1884, but not on the 1883, he may be in another State in Oz? ( maybe.) Try other States. S.A would carry N.S.W and Victoria. If he is not listed in any other State, then this may give a clue!! he may be on board or travelling from the U.K to Australia. This would at least narrow down your search. eg. if you find him in S.A on the 1884 this reduces your search by 4 years. Also try S.A Electoral roll's for residents. Hope this is of some use. Tony Oz.

Hi, I have been reading -"g grandmother not on 1901 census" and have taken note of the replies. I wonder about various spellings of surnames and christian names. My g grandfather Charles James BARRY - what variations could he be under.? He was born 1860 Islington London. His father Charles Hansford Barry , mother Eliza A , siblings William and Ernest and Amy on 1881 census I guess it could be anything? Appreciate any help or suggestions Thanks Victoria
