Many many thanks guys, what a terrific bunch you are. Lodging House Nell? Could be I suppose. I cant imagine them having houses big enough then, can you - but he is in a skilled profession so perhaps they did have. Sorry the Mary Gorden is a married girl with a husband and child (boarding) Cazza. That list of Gordons was interesting though Trish, does sound like her lot, doesnt it. Charlie out of prison and in the army by then, eh? I noticed when Mary Ellen did marry (1894)her first child was born in Egremont, which is apparently Cumberland and I did find a group of Gordons there who may also be related as they were from Ireland. Maybe she was living with them in 1881. Thanks so much for your time and effort everyone. I am really always so pleased for everyones input, sometimes others see something which is staring me in the face but I dont notice. One thing I dont understand on ancestry is if you are looking for someone in a particular census and you enter the info even on the best matches tab, they dont come up. If you do a blanket request up they come in the right census. Why is that. I wonder how many people have thought their ancestors are missing on particular census because they have done it they way.

I've just looked at the 1881 on familysearch. I see there are some boarders in the household. I'm wondering if Lh is a partial transcription of "Lodging-house [keeper]" - ie she ran a B&B. You'd need to check the original form to see if the k for keeper has been left off/scrawled over etc. nell

Hi I have not found anything on Mary Ellen but I found this in the 1901 census and think they may be part of her family. Not a great help but maybe interesting. Sorry , not too bright tonight ..... thought I was being clever too.. Do you know if she did marry though - could that be why you can't find her? Or is she in the space ship with my rellies? Maybe in her case LH could mean 'left home?' !! Raining here too.... Alice

Alice, thanks, but I saw that one and Gorden is her married name - she appears to be with a husband and child, doesnt she. My Mary Ellen Gordon is about 16 and unmarried. Thanks for trying though. Windy tonight, eh? Nell, its on the 1881 so no image, just a printed (Lh).

Heather Without seeing the original it is impossible to guess what Lh means, it might even be two different letters altogether. As for prison, apparently 24,000 people were in prison on census night 1861 and in 1849 over 166,000 people spent some time in prison. It was probably comfier than the workhouse! nell

Just looking at my husbands Great Grandparents on the 1881 census in Liverpool. They were from Ireland. The husband is shown as a joiner/carpenter but next to the wife under occupation is (Lh). What do you think this means - thought of left-handed but decided that wouldnt be an occupation! Ideas gratefully received! Oh and if anyone cant sleep tonight - I have been trawling the 1891 census for Mary Ellen Gordon in Liverpool born 1875 - she is about 16 and not with her family so I wondered if she is in service (though I found her 19 year old bro in prison for that census!!). Tried all the Mary Gordons/Gordans (she is not the Gordan in Toxteth). Tried Mary Cordon. Many thanks guys, you are an inspiration!
