Hi Christine, Have a look on this site, they have a bit of info and some cracking photos of Carters in Liverpool. www(.)scottiepress(.)org then go to the archives section my ancestors were Carters and when I contacted the the Carters assoc in Liverpool they were able to tell me my family had been one of the earliest and longest running firm of carters in Liverpool, they even gave me the address of the stables!! Cant wait till I can get to Liverpool as I want to see the stuff they have about them in the museum Best wishes, Kathleen

My Grandad was a carter. He worked for British Rail, and had a horse and cart. I was allowed to go and see the horse and give it carrots. Don't know what he actually did. I just thought it was great that he owned a horse. Well I was only 5.!!!!!!!!!!! And it was a long time ago. Ann

I would think deliver goods to and from the Station using a horse and cart - many of the carts were covered with a double door at the back. I suppose they may have been employed by the railway company. Many of my ancestors were carters, but more associated with the building trade around Harrow and Wealdstone, so the occupation is for instance "contractor, builders carter"
