People in Victorian times often wrote capital A as a small a, but bigger, so the C could be an uncompleted a. Perhaps she was Alice but nicknamed Annie? nell

Louise Some people seemed to call themselves whatever they fancied! My ggg grandmother was born and baptised Margaret Rose in 1844 and married Thomas Moore at the age of 21 (but I can find no record of him after that so it was shortlived). Despite this she was known as: 1851 - Margaret Rose 1861 - Amelia Rose 1871 - Margaret Amelia Moore 1881 - Margaret M Moore (no longer with Moore but with J G Smith who was a lodger!) 1891 - Amelia Smith (with the lodger) 1901 - Margaret B Moore (Smith died in 1896) She was finally buried as Margaret Amelia Smith in 1919 but where Amelia came from I have no idea. Half her kids were known as Smith and the parish records often have 'Moore, commonly known as Smith' on their marriage entries. Not one of her ten kids has a father listed on the birth certificate but the last five have Smith as their middle name so they were obviously the lodgers! Believe me it took some time to find this lot. Don't worry it will eventually fall into place somehow for you. Good luck Andrea
