What is a Stationery Engine Driver apart from what first comes into your head - operating machinery standing still. Lin

STATIONARY ENGINE DRIVER A person who operated a steam engine which was used for pumping water or sewage, or driving machinery in an industrial environment such as a factory, mill or mine. Not a train that stands still then...........LOL Hope it helps Esta

My Great Grandad was a stationary engine driver at a Gas Works in London. Basically the engine doesnt go anywhere (hence stationary!) - in this case coke being moved from one part of the site to another. This figures as before that he was a stoker on a ship.
