Hi Andy, this is a long shot, something for a rainy day .... go to: http://www.geneanet.org/ and enter "Hanhart alsace" you should get 26 hits. Click on the contcts on the left habd side, and go to their web-sites. If you are lucky, you might recognise some names, place names or other details, which will tie in with the people you are searching for. hope this helps.

Does anyone have any advice for trying to see whether ancestors moved abroad, in particular to either France, Germany or Switzerland? I'm trying to find out what happened to various members of the WATTS family; my link to the family was via Sidney Edward WATTS, a brewer in Newcastle-on-Tyne. However, he was originally born in Hampstead, London. Some of his brothers and sisters were still unmarried in 1901 and into their late 30s and early 40s. However some appear to have disappeared at various stage, maybe they died but I have no proof. Sidney's mother was a Sophie/Sophia HANHART, born in Alsace, France. The children I'm having problems finding are: Henry Hanhart WATTS Alfred John WATTS Charles Wehnert WATTS I think Charles appears on the 1881 census but not after that whereas I can't find Henry or Alfred after 1871. Looking for the Hanhart name on the internet, the name seems to originate from one of the above countries. It's only a feeling that they may have moved there simply because I can't think of anything else. The WATTS family were fairly well to do, Sophia's husband was a scientist/scientific writer. The eldest daughter was a governess, another daughter was a music teacher. Any ideas as to how I can progress on this one?
