I have the N.I. number of my birth mother. Can I use this, at least, to find out if she is living or dead? Thanks

I'm afraid not, DSS/Tax staff would get the sack and or imprisoned even for divulging info like that, sorry. jacquie

Just thought I once had a case many years ago where an estranged mother wanted to get in touch with her son, we couldn't of course give her any information but agreed to forward the letter. Many people of course do not have up to date records and have out of date addresses (by many years so no reply may not mean they're not interested). It worth writing just asking them to forward they might agree. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Jacquie

hi i work for the social security office and deal with N.I enquiries and as soon as the person dies there is a thing on their record that if anyone looks at it it asks them to forward details as of why you are looking at the record. so as Jacquline said we would be sacked if we looked at it. it is very tempting though as i have lots of family members that i would love to get in contact with.

You can use the official sources to find your mother via Traceline: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/traceline/index.asp#0 There is a charge, you have to have a genuine reason, and they will only pass on a message from you, they won't divulge her present whereabouts. Nell
