I hope someone can give me some advice. I am trying to find the names of the parents of Hannah nee.Mumfourd/Mumford Doherty and her husband Mark Doherty. I have 2 early census records from 1851 and 1861 census containing them and their children and I have details of the children from IGI. I also have details of their wedding on 10 Nov 1828 in Stoke on Trent and this evening I think I have located their deaths using the free BMD site. The ages match with those given in the 2 census records and also the marriage details but now I am at a dead end and do not know how to progress. I have Mark's birthplace as Manchester (1806) and Hanna's (1802) as Hanley. How can I find their parents names? I am searching all of this from overseas but will be in London in a couple of weeks time over a weekend. Will there be anywhere in London where I can access further information? Any tips would be great Thanks Pam

Pam The Family Records Office in London has indexes to births, marriages and deaths after 1st July 1837 for the whole country - before that, civil registration didn't exist. The FRC also has all the censuses 1841-1901 for the whole country. Their website: http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/ If you want information before 1 July 1837, you need to look at the relevant parish registers. If you go to www.familysearch.org, you can find some births and marriages, but not every parish is there, and you still need to check info with the original entries. Church of England parish registers are kept in local records offices. Manchester records office: http://www.gmcro.co.uk/default.htm Hanley will be covered by Stoke http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/live/welcome.asp?id=2586 nell

If you are going to be in London the Society of Genealogists library in Goswell Road may have copies or transcripts of the parish registers you need, I know they have at least some Manchester registers. Check their website (www.soc.org.uk)to see whether they cover the parishes you want to look at and for details of where they are. Non members can pay a fee to use their library.
