Disappearing Gladstone's

My Gladstone relatives all hail from the Berwick area of Northumberland. Robert Gladstone and his wife Annie and their children all appear up to the 1891 census then in the 1901 census only 2 of the 7 children appear and no parents. I've checked Scotland also to no avail. There is a suggestion that they may have emigrated. Was it popular to emigrate from this particular area at this time, and does anyone know how to go about checking such info. thanks

The Ellis Island website is good for USA. Just type Ellis Island into your searcg engine.
