How do I go about tracing my father's death and birth certificate? I did not really know my father but found that he had died a few years ago. He died in hospital and was cremated. I do not know the whereabouts of any other family so am unable to ask anybody else. Any help and advice will be appreciated Thanks Bev

First of all for the death, you will have to consult the 1837 indexes, either on line, which is a very good source and cert can be also be ordered, or if you are able to get to London, at the Family Record office in Mydleton St Islington. As you have an idea of what year your father died, then obviously start searhing that year. Same applies for birth cert, if you know what age he was when died, calculate his birth year, or if you already know what year he was born, again, the same source the 1837 indexes will give you the reference and cert can be ordered, these cost about £7.50

If you know where he was cremated there may be a plaquee in his memory which might give his date of birth. Ann Glos
