Although you are supposed to record your previous as well as your maiden name on the birth certificate of your children, if you are simply asked for your maiden name you do not volunteer the additional information. Harriett may have given her maiden name, but have married George Cresswell as a widow. I have similar instances in my family and it took ages to find the marriage as I had no surname to cross reference against. If you use the freebmd site, you might find a George Cresswell cross referencing to a Harriett. If you then found an earlier marriage of Harriett cross referencing to this new surname, then you would almost certainly have found your ancestor. Good luck Brenda

Hi, on my GGF birth cert it says Mary Ann Horstead formerly Smith. In fact they didnt marry until 5 years afterwards - 17 years after they set up home.

Formerly McKenzie should mean that's her maiden name. If she had been married before it would say something like. "Harriett Cresswell, late Smith, formerly McKenzie" where Smith would be the married name. BUT - they didn't have to prove anything so it could be a former married name or just a misheard name when the registrar was entering it. Anne

Hi, my GGGGrandmother registered her daughter (Evelyn) with the surname Cresswell, father as George Cresswell and herself as Harriett Cresswell formerly Mckenzie. Does anyone know if this is more likely to be a previous married name than a maiden name? Cant find record of a marriage between these Cresswells...or an appropriate birth of a Harriett Mckenzie...any ideas gratefully received! thanks, Jacqui
