There's a message on the GRO site at the moment saying that due to exceptionally high demand, certificates are taking up to 6 days longer than usual for standard service. I blame the BBC!!! Lou

Christine leaps onto her hobby-horse again!! Have a look at http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ and then follow the Local BMD link to find a list of Local Offices with searchable BMD sites. If you scrolld down past Yorks, you find the other ones with different formats as well. I find them very good, where they exist. They aren't complete (neither is FreeBMD) but you can search for the paired names of a marriage, and it even specifies where the ceremony took place (which Church or Register Office). When you find your target, the ref (not the same as the GRO ref) is a link to a partially completed application form. Prices the same as GRO, service at least as quick. The info is split only into years (not quarters) but is the source-data for the GRO index, so sometimes can be more accurate. (Have you found the links to Getting Started on your home page, here? There are some good ideas and links there. Originally hidden so you had to scroll down to find it, there's now another link at the right near the top.) Christine

You can also apply for them from the registry office local to the area that the birth/marriage/death was registered in. i use my local office and they only charge £7.00, the same as 1837online. I always enclose a 1st class SAE & they return them in 24 hours. It's worth enquirying locally first. Samantha

Hi Christopher, Welcome to a hobby that will steal all your hard earned cash away! ;~) I get mine from the general records office http://www.gro(.)gov(.)uk/gro/content/ You'll need to remove the brackets. Halfway down the page click on the link to obtain a certificate. They walk you through it step by step. The hardest part is waiting for it to come in the post! It usually takes about 7 - 10 days depending on their backlog. Best of luck Sioux Haha Diane beat me to it whilst I was typing !

Christopher, If you want to go to the website direct, its www.gro.gov.uk. Likewise, I've never waited more than a week for one to come through. Di
