I recently visited SA and did a tour of the Battlefields. Basically everyone who passed through that area seems to have fought with whoever was there! However, there is a lot of interest in this turbulent history and there is an excellent museum in Ladysmith which has lots of information. There are also a number of local historians (many of whom work as part time tour guides) who are fanatical about collecting and sharing information. Maybe you could get hold of one of these through the museum or the local tourist office. Given how friendly everone was on my visit I'm sure they'll point you in the right direction. It's also probably worth checking out UK libraries. Larger ones will almost certainly have some reference books on the Boer Wars which may help you narrow down the period in which you will be searching for your relative. Good luck.

1879 was the Zulu War. The 1st Anglo-Boer War was 1880-81 2nd Boer War 1899-1902. What information are you looking for, exactly? nell

I believe you may be thinking of the Zulu War rather than the Boer War if you are refering to the film Zulu ie Roukes Drift, Michael Caine 'Zulu's, thousands of em'. Try doing a google search. Rachel

I recommend you put "boer" into the thread-search and see what comes up. One site which gets recommended (tho' I don't know whether it will help you) is; http://hometown.aol.*co.uk/KevinAsplin/home.html (remove asterisk) Christine

Has anyone done any research about the '1st Boer War' 1879 - the one the film 'Zulu' was based on - I believe my great grandfather fought in it Christine
