It varies. With rural areas it is quite easy to read through whole areas - make sure you note down which pieces you have searched. Restrict your search to a limited number of surnames and record the piece/folio/number so you can get back to a record if you want to check something. It is not bad now because lots of people have copies of the censuses but you used to get requests to look for long lists of names if you admitted to having a copy of a census! To find a piece number, go to the PRO/National Archives website and search PROCAT for the place name/year/RG10 (or whatever) but this will only work for villages or towns i.e. not streets. See if any FHS has an index to the census, sometimes there will be a name index for a town that you can buy. It is possible to go through a whole town but it takes some time. You can scan down census pages quite fast but only do one or two census pieces at a time then have a rest. If you have any addresses from other censuses or records then start with them, often families remained in quite a small area even in large towns.

I have just bought a couple of census disks for 1861 and 1871 but do not have a clue how to use them. Im looking at them now just baffled. Do you just go down hoping for the best or can you search by name or street etc? Can anyone give any guidance at all? thanks, Claire
