Just a quick update....the reason I wanted to Josephs birth certificate was so I could find his mothers name and that would hopefully allow me to connect to some other researchers trees I think I *may* have found Joseph and his family on the 1861 census :) I bought the census last summer but when I searched it I found that the address given on Josephs marriage certificate was missing and at that time I didnt really want to search through every single street and name. Yesterday I decided to try searching through the whole of Hackney to see if there was any sign of the family and I believe I have found them although the surname is not very clear. Off to check some other bits now - keep your fingers crossed for me! Netty

Anette, I assume you're looking for the Joseph Flewers born in Stoke Newington? Don't forget to include 1840 in your search as he is listed as 40 in 1881 and 50 in 1891. Crista

There is a Joseph Flowers born in Births Mar 1845 FLOWERS Joseph * 4 4_0 It's not very helpful because it doesn't say where he was born or the GRO numbers. Maybe someone on 1837 could check it out for you??

There is one Joseph Flewers listed on the 1901 Census Age 58 Living at 6, Wellington St, Hackney. Married with 4 children working as a Gardner, listed as born in Stoke Newington. Send me a message with your email if you'd like me to send you the Census scan. ............................ It's me again ...... I was right ..... He's listed on the 1871 Census as FLOWERS. Married to the same lady with their first son :) Have that scan saved too if you want both. Will be back after casualty! ;) Sioux

Anette, Think about the style of handwriting, could it simply be a case of mistranscription. Have you searched under FLOWERS? Or a different spelling .... FLOOWERS? Sioux

Where abouts was he born? - if you're lucky, he might be easier to find on the local BMD site, if there is one. Then you only have to pay the normal fee. Christine

The GRO will do a search over a consecutive 3 years, I think it costs about £11.50. If you know the district you can ask if the local register office would do one. Info from GRO here: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/obtainingcertificates/certificatefees.asp#0 Nell

I've tried to find the ref on the St Caths Indexes for the birth certificate of Joseph FLEWERS who I believe was born 1841-1843 The entries are hand written and not clear at all and he's not come up on FreeBMD as yet :( Does anyone know if there's a service available where a search can be made for a certificate over a given period of time? Thanks Netty
