I have several people I can't find on that site and I know for definite when they died - it's very annoying! A tip though - make sure you have pop-ups enabled before you look at a cert - I just about put my fist through the screen when that happened!! Anne

I have several from the same family that don't seem to have registered their births c1826 - 1840 there may be more I haven't found yet. Apparently it cost money to register so many couldn't afford to do it. Have found their marriage and death certificates and they said they were born in Edinburgh in any census I've found. My next mission is to send for parish records via the LDS but unfortunately not sure of which parish they were in - seems as though they straddle St Giles, St Andrew, Cannongate, Edinburgh Parish and Tron!!!!!! I did find a birth in the OPR for Berwick on Tweed for 1830 which I couldn't find anywhere else - so you may be lucky

I had a similar problem with my gt grandfather - Edwin Murray- I had his merchant navy records stating that he was born in Edinburgh in 1873 - it took me months to find it as he was registered at birth as Edwin Murray Williams so keep searching. I have no idea why he was given this name as I have seen traced his father back to London he was a Murray so an unsolved mystery.

Hi Vera. Am a real"newbie" just starting out. I want to start tracing Scottish family. Am going to subscribe to the site Scotlands People, saw your message and wondered if you have any tips or advice before I start. Hope you don't mind me asking. Cheers, Joan.

Vera I heard that in the old days people didn't really treat records as serious, some didn't bother to tell ,records lost between A & B, etc, some people will never be traced even though we know they exist.

Would I be right in assuming that if the records are not on this site that they do not exist or is it just that not all records are available on the net. Would I be wasting my time in visiting Edinburgh next year and looking for the records myself. Im pulling my hair out here, been looking now for three years and no forward now than I was at the start. Why do we put ourselves through this? I have six siblings (Jean, David, Laurance, Frances, Elizabeth & Ann SUTTIE) all born in Perth, Scotland. David emigrated to Australia, have all his descendants, Laurance went to South Africa have all his descendants (even found the ships they sailed out on!) but the four that remained here in Scotland have all disappeared, together with their parents David Suttie and Elizabeth Hay. No marriage records, not on census, no death records for any of them!! If anyone wants a look up on Scotlandspeople I have some credits left.
