Lorraine - I had a look at this - subscribed for a year - got really stuck and didn't renew. I have been researching on and off for nearly 20 years. Search all the free sites first. Get out to the local history societys. Join your local family history society and they will help you tremendously. This Genes re-united is fantastic. In the last week i have managed to identifiy three positive links to my existing family and move back yet another generation. Have a look at IGI microfiche. Go along to the local Mormon family history centre. Ask questions all the time.......and then think about Ancestry subscriptions. Karen

I subscribed via the d*t c*m site earlier in the year. Due to the exchange rate, it cost about £65 pa.

Sioux Thanks for info - as I am at the beginning of my searches and my mother-in-law is also researching I may subscribe for the full year. Also I might be of help to others on here who need a quick look up, because I myself was fortunate to benefit from Judith's help last night when she found family without even being asked to, so I'd like to be able to 'pay it forward' thanks for the advice Loz :-)

Hi Lorraine, If you think you might be able to complete all the research you can in 3 months you could sign up for the quarterly option which - with tax - is £29. Thats the option I've taken, then If I want to carry on they will debit my card with another quarters payment, but If I've finished using it or can't afford it I'll cancel then. I know in the long run you end up paying more over the year but it's more managable for me. Best wishes Sioux

Hi Heather, Thank for the reply, I've just signed up for the 'pay per view' for now and I must agree it is good and I am enjoying myself very tempted to subscribe at the end of the month when I get paid. I've only been researching for three weeks and have spent quite a bit on the other sites just trying to narrow down searches for which I've only had a hand full of positive hits, so I think a years subscription for unlimited access sounds good to me. However, I am getting quite frustrated because when I hit on some of the info my PC keeps shutting me off the site and I have to keep logging in again. Will not give up though!!! Thanks again Loz :-)

Hi there, yes its a brilliant site and has helped me no end. Also check out familysearch which is good for dates before the census returns. I think ancestry cost about £72 for a whole year - so what £1.20 a week. Compared with other pay per view sites, its a bargain. The nice thing is you have 24/7 access and you can fiddle about to your hearts content with just guesses and a lot does come from those. For example, trying different versions of your surname in case they have been mistranscribed or just entering an unusual christian name without surname and seeing what that turns up.

I've just signed in for the 14 day trial, but I can't find out how much it is for the full subscription. Is it a good site for an absolute beginner? Loz :-)
