Have you tried the Family History Online site? You do have to pay, but each record is only a few pence. I have found quite a few BMDs on there which weren't on the LDS site. |

You only get father's names after registration started (1837). There is no special space for it in parish registers before that time. |

Could you send for the birth certificate of one of the children if any were born after 1837? They would have the maiden name of the mother. Alternatively you could go for her death certificate which would usually say '.... wife of Joe Bloggs' for a woman. Anne |

Diana I can only speak from experience and I would say that the parish register at that time should list fathers names. Of course there could well be the odd situation when they don't. If you start to go back further it doesn't always tell you. I'd say it was definitely worth a look Jeanette x |

Thank for repling Jeanette I have found the parish where i think he married his first wife and the name and a date for the first marriage but how can i prove they are one of the same person as on his marrigae cert to my 3xgrandmother it only gives his father as being Henry would the parish registers give this information . But would this still leave it open to doubt . Diana |

Hi Diana Sounds like you need to look at the parish registers for the village. He may not have married his first wife there though. It was quite usual to marry in the brides parish. Have you found any clues to the first marriage on the IGI on the family search site? Jeanette x |

I have a marriage cert which tells me that my 3x grandfather was a widow when he married my3x granmother in 1848 I am sure i know who his other wife was and i a have a date of marriage that i think might be theirs 1832 but how do i go about proving this and where would i go as they had children that i would like to add to my tree i have found a census return dated 1841 with his first wife and children the ages and other facts recorded fit really nicely and the villiage was small and he was born and died there . Thank you very much Diana |
