Are you confident that Thomas didn't have a second name, James, to which he took a liking later in life? I have a geat-uncle (or so) who was baptised Eli Hector CHRISTMAS. Early on he referred to himself as Eli, but by the 1901 census he'd dropped the name in favour of Hector. (Lucky I knew he had both names!). Have you tried the Staffs BMD site? http://www.bmsgh.org I succumbed to the temptation of a puzzle and just had a look. No Caroline so far but (these are all the Greatorex births registered 1837-80 and that they've transcribed so far): Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference 1838: GREATOREX George Lichfield Lichfield L/1/331 GREATOREX James Lichfield Lichfield L/1/324 GREATOREX Sarah Lichfield Lichfield L/1/384 1851 GREATOREX Alfred Edmund Newcastle-under-Lyme Newcastle-Under-Lyme NUL/13/086 In the range 1837-1880 thy have so far transcribed 7 Greatorex marriages and 5 deaths - none for a Caroline. But worth keeping an eye on it as this is one of the sites that does seem to be updated from time to time. Christine

She might not have been telling the truth about her age. Have you searched further than the one year? Could her birth have been registered under a different surname - perhaps James and Thomas were her father and step-father?? Anne

Michelle, If you go to the Guild of One name studies site there are details of surnames being studied and contact details. GREATOREX is listed there so the researcher of that name may be able to help.

I am looking for a Caroline Greatorex. I have her marriage cert to Charles Pickering in 1871. Says her father is Thomas Greatorex. She was aged 24 on the marriage cert in 1871, making her born in 1847. I have searched freeBMD, 1837online and many other places (LDS too) and cannot find any record of her birth. The only one is for Caroline Greatorex b1847 Lichfield, I know thats not the one as her father is James (and I need it to say THOMAS!!) I would be very grateful if any of you kind and helpful people can come up with something or maybe point me in a different direction. She also had a son Charles b1862 Uttoxeter (she was not married then and the cert has a line through fathers name) I assume she was 15 when she had him. This is all I can find. Please help me someone :-( thanks Michelle
