In the meantime, you may find it useful to read this research guide about 19th century criminal ancestors: http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=120 nell

Main collections at the Devon Record Office, Exeter Devon Quarter Sessions, 1592-1971, covering ***criminal jurisdiction for the county and civil administration (including records of county roads and bridges, police stations, alehouses,*** poor law unions, plans of public undertakings, ***gaols, lunatic asylums); Devon County Council, 1889-1974, covering county administration (including council and committee minutes, accounts, records of local authority schools, etc.) I believe this office is closed until about February 2005, but these look like some of the records that may be of use to you. nell

I expect his family were sent to the poor house because he was in prison and unable to earn money to buy their food/pay their rent. As to why he was there, you need to find the Exeter prison jail register which will give details about his crime, sentence, a description (or maybe a photograph!). I'll have a look. There will probably be trial records in the local records office too. Hold on. nell
