Greenwich Pensioners

I've found one of my ancestors served his time in the Royal Marines and retired as a Greenwich Pensioner. My understanding is the the Greenwich version covered Naval and Marine personnel as opposed to the Chelsea Pensioners from the army. Does anyone have more information?

Have you looked at the TNA site? One of my ancestors is specifically mentioned at a period when I think he became a Greenwich Pensioner. I've not followed it up yet, but Kew does have various leaflets online. Naval records, once you get into them, are wonderful. Brenda

Hello Brenda, I did have a quick look but seemed mostly to have records of Will, unless the guy pegged it as a pensioner it didn't seem to offer much.

Hi Roy You'll have gathered the site isn't static? There's new stuff on there from time to time, so it's worth going back. It's a bit overloaded at the moment because they made a public announcement of the fact that they've got all the medal cards available now for army & RAFC from WW1. Christine

I'm not talking about documentsonline - how nice if they all were! - but the catalogue. Choose: Search our collections/the Catalogue Search that under your man's name, narrow it by quoting ADM29 in the department or series code, and see what comes up. Brenda

Id be very interested in the results. My Great Great Uncle, Jonas Horstead was also a Greenwich Pensioner. He was injured at sea and I understand lived there for many years, dying in 1913 at the age of 64. If you do find the records, please let me know. I wondered if they would be at the Greenwich Maritime Museum?

Roy and Heather - I think you will find that most of any surviving records will be at The (PRO) now National Archives at Kew. There are two very good books which you should be able to find at your library - Tracing your Ancestors in the Pro by Amanda Bevan and Ancestral Trails by Mark D Herber. Both these books will tell you what you need to know.
