Tentative Linkages Whenever there is a possible link that has not been ratified, I STILL allow people access to view my tree. I work on the basis that this allows then to see for themselves whether a link is valid. If the link is NOT valid - they can potentially look at the other surname links and also remove those individuals from their potential future lines of enquiry at the same time. So, in my humble opinion - the ability to view trees where there does NOT prove to be a link can still be beneficial to the 'viewer'. - T.

Most of the people I have had contact with do have a proven link, such as a shared ancestor Most people only expect a rundown of names dates and places that relate to the name. One person, albeit not on this site sent me a gedcom of over 500 names on the surname line I am researching.

Yes Carol, I feel the same way. I want to share any info I have found with people who have a genuine connection. I dont care if I have spent hours/weeks/months on it because it goes around. I have had info from others that instantly took my research back 200 years and I am more than grateful that they were happy to share this with me. I hope the info I have helped them to get a bigger picture too. I do appreciate people should have the manners to ask to use the stuff on their tree but I am sure I would have no objection if they are a rellie however distant.

Following on from the Tree Poaching thread, I see it from another angle. I have found links and made contact, and have been given a lot of information about that side of the tree. I always feel guilty when the knowledge I have is limited, so I am unable to give the sender very much in return. I always keep the details though, and pass on anything I subsequently find. Anyone else had this happen.
