Thanks Christine I will bear that in mind. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Surprised there is still anyone up and about this time of night, having said that I should have gone to bed hours ago so thats where I am now heading, thanks again.

Vera, a wee tip for looking on Scotlands People, the 1881 census are transcribed so it only uses up one credit to view them whereas the 1891 and 1901 are the images you view and use up 5 credits at a time. Also there is a great message board for any help you may need. Another thing, on a Scottish birth certificate, you will also find the parents date and place of marriage (if they are married) which is very helpful. Good luck Christine

Thanks Christine and Helen for your replies. First time I have posted a message on here and was very pleased to receive a reply and so quickly. Thanks for your advice will join scotlandspeople tomorrow and give it a go. So far I have not been very lucky with the census on other sites probably because I am looking in Scotland. Will look at death certs as well didnt realise they would be that informative. Many thanks.

I don't know how common a name Suttie is, but one way of confirming the right person is to find them on a census. The census should give the place of birth and their age (which could be out by a year depending on whether the birthday falls before or after census night). Of course, there are errors on the census and on certificates, but I have generally found that both combined give a good idea of whether or not you have the right person. If you can find them on a census when they are with their parents, that relationship will be confirmed on birth certs (fathers and mothers names) and on their wedding cert (father's name). I believe in Scotland they give more detail on their certs than in England. nell

Vera, did the father David Suttie die in Scotland if so both his parents names should be on the death cert. Failing that if he married in Scotland after 1855 his marriage cert would also show both parents names. That should help you to find the right birth. Hope that helps Christine

Am I being thick? How do you know if you have found the right person or not? I have found my great, great grandfather (Laurance Suttie and all his siblings and so therefore know the names of his father (David Suttie). I have been using familysearch, which has been great, but I am now considering paying to use Scotlandspeople. My problems is if I do a search for David Suttie how do I know when I have found the right one as there is more than one borne within a few years of each other, so how do I find out which is the right one? Any help would be very appreciated as Im still wondering how everyone gets on so well with their trees I have been stuck for ages on mine. Thanks.
