Hi Bev There is a site called "historicaldirectories" if you can find one that covers the area some have lists of streets & the business conducted there, also they might contain adv + names & address of the more prominent people in the area.I have found valuable bits of info & increased my knowledge of the old days from reading these. Regards John. |

Thanks Guys I guess I'm going to need to beg B&B from my cousin in London so that I can take a look at the records in Kew. At least I have a company to look at as a starting point (Thanks:-)). Cant help wondering what happened to the original butchers shop though????? Cheers Bev :-) |

Stafford was on the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) and at the end of a branch of the Great Northern Railway (GNR). Altrincham was within a mile of the LNWR and had a link with a subsidiary of the GNR. I would say LNWR was more likely. |

Please could I have your thoughts on what happened here?? My Gt Gt Grandfather is on the 1871 Census as a scholar (aged 8) and his father is a butcher. On the 1881 Census, his father had died but both he and his mother are listed as butchers. Now on the 1891 Census, he has married, moved from Stafford to Altrincham, and his occupation is listed as Railway guard???? Now on the 1901 Census, he is still in Altrincham but his occupation is back to Butcher, along with that of his son (who's not really his son - but thats another story:-)). I wonder does anybody know which railway co. would have been in that area at that time and why the lapse do you think??? Any thoughts gratefully received. Bev :-) |
