Hello I have an unusual family legend. My Husbands great great great Gandfather (Name Brooker possibly Holmes). Was the Master of the hounds. The story goes that he went out one night to feed the hounds and never came back. What little remains that were found of him had been thoroughly chomped. We have always viewed this as a far fetched story. It was supposed to have happened in or around Arundel. Quite by chance we had to travel there on business. I contacted Arundel Castle and enquired about whether fox hounds had been housed there. No they had not. So we called at the local museum to see if we could find anything out there. No such luck. We assumed we had been right and the story was far fetched We had left the museum when the curator came running out after us, an older Gentleman in the museum knew of the incident but could no longer remember the details. The museum and the Tourist information Beureau put out an appeal on the local radio to see if anyone else could remember such a story but never got any replies. Can anyone suggest how on earth someone would go about trying to verify the truth. We actually think the family may have been accident prone because his son was run over by a train. Jenine |

Try contacting the local paper. Even if the local residents can't help, you may fid their reporter can do a bit of digging. |

Actually, there MUST be some web sites about Hunts and Hounds. Try googling. Also, having said that, what about the Hare and Hound magazine? |

If he came to such a gruesome end then I should think there must have been an inquest? Perhaps you could find some records of this? |
