Hi Does anyone know if you trace divorce records or find information if your relatives split up. the dilema i have it that my gg grandfather Albert Davey and is was Clara Davey, they gave birth to my grandad in 1905, now somewhere after 1910 onwards we think he was brought up in a catholic home in nottingham, the story to this that he was told his parents where dead. However i have traced my gggrandads death to 1929... so we have no idea why he would have gone into this home, the only idea we have is that maybe his parents split up. can anyone help or give me an idea on where to go......... thanks Amanda

Have you found his mother's death? It is possible she died and he couldn't cope with bringing a child up on his own. Afraid I don't have anything to suggest about divorce records, sorry. Carole

Amanda Info about finding out about divorces is here: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/divorce/step2.htm Divorce in the early 20th century was still quite rare. I don't see it as a reason to separate a child from both his parents. There is also the possibility that the parents split up without going through legal formalities. Have you tried finding archives of the Catholic home, which might give a clue as to why he was brought up there? nell

I believe that in very many cases, children admitted to children's homes were told that their parents were dead, regardless of the truth of the matter. There might be all sorts of reasons why children were put into homes. The parents may have separated, but equally the mother might have been unable to cope. There are cases where some of the children are in a home, while others remain with the parents. To tell a child that its parents are dead seems an act of unbelieveable cruelty, but was considered by those who ran such homes to be in the best interests of the child. Brenda
