I have a relative Abraham Lancer whos death was registered in the September quarter of 1924 and says age when died 24 where would they have got his age from as I cannot find his birth anywhere near 1900

I have several death certificates where I know the age at death is wrong because I have the birth certificates. It all depends on who registered the death. It might not have been a relative and even if it was, they may not have known for certain how old he was. How many of your relatives could you put an exact age to? Kath. x

Have tried putting Abraham Lancer into Ancestry and only one record comes up. It is for an Abraham Lancer born 4th September 1912 in Westminster and died July 1998. I wondered if this could be your man's son and if so your Abraham would have to have been born beore 1900. It may not be anything to do with your family but thought it was worth letting you know. Please remember that a lot of Jews anglicised there names to "fit in" Could it be possible that Lancer was not his birth name? I have heard that there are quite a few websites dedicated to Jewish ancestry. Good luck with your search Janet

It may be worth looking at other LANCER births to see if that helps. On freebmd there is a Samuel born early 1900s. Nothing to say he's your family of course but a good name for a Jewish son, so worth a 2nd glance. If he too was the son of Wolf, it would help to establish when the family were in UK and narrow down the time of entry if you think they came from abroad. Have you found any Lancers on 1901 census (or LANTZ or similar?). Perhaps trade directories for the area would show him. Naturalisation records may be another place to look.
