I wonder if anyone knew of any websites which have definitions of causes of death. I've just received a certificate which states the cause of death as Phithisis. Does anyone know what this means? thank you for your help, Lucia |

or indeed 'Consumption' (another name often used at that time for what we now know as TB). Jonathan |

Phthisis was particularly used in place of pulmonary (ie affecting the lungs) tuberculosis, and seems to have been used as a term once consumption stopped being used. There's a list of archaic medical terms here: www.paul_smith.doctors.org.uk/ArchaicMedicalTerms.htm TB was a very common killer in Victorian and early 20th century times. nell |
