My mother was adopted by a family in 1938, but was legally adopted in 1961. On her birth certifacate and adoption papers it has only her mothers name. But no other details, other than being born at St James' hospital london. Also her home address where she was a resident housekeeper. (home of adoptive parents). Where do I start? ?

You could find your Grandmother on the electrol register of that time, to see how long she had lived there and if she stayed local later. You could obtain the original birth certificate of your mother (the one with her birth name on if they do that for adopted people - do any adopted people know please?) and work from there (get her mothers birth certicicate, any subsequent marriage etc) hope they weren't called Smith. The GRO index online (or at a records office) will have the index references you will need to get the certificates. Jacquie
