Thank you Julie. Yes that just might be a way forward. She can but try.My friend has wonderful family photos of her own ancestors and this has made her daughter want to find out more about her father's birth family.

That does seem an awful long time but perhaps he was fostered for a long time before being adopted.

Thank you Sandra. I fully understand that the adoption was often away from the birth area but it would seem that this person was born in 1943 but adopted 1961? That's a long long time.

I think you will find that adoption process takes some time and it seems to me allways in a diffrent area than the person lived.

Thank you for replying Sylvia. The family showed me a copy of a certificate in his adopted name and it just gave Liverpool for place of birth. Another column did refer to an adoption through the named North Wales court but we were puzzled by the date there which said 1961. Why would this be so long after birth? What's going on here?

Hi Gwyneth, your friend can look up his adoption at the FRC, there is a section for Adoptions. Also, if she knows his orignal name she could obtain his birth certificate. Regarding the medical aspect, she could try the social services where he was adopted to see if they would let her have access to that information. Sue

Thank you for that John. I've just had a look and it would seem that my friend's daughter has no right of access to his adoption file. I don't suppose there is any way round this? He was brought up as an only child and his adopting parents have died, so there is no one to upset. As he died so young, I think they are interested in the medical aspect too.

Hi Gwyneth If you go to the GRO site there appears to be info which might get you started, the chances are only your friend will be able to do anything i think it is a pretty touchy area. John.

Who is allowed access to an adoption file? I am trying to help a friends's daughter. She is 31 and would like to learn more about her deceased father's birth family. He was born in 1943 in Liverpool, adopted and brought up in North Wales and he died suddenly in 1986. Does his daughter, his only child have a right to look at his file? If so, how would she go about this please?
