Baptisms and burials in different churches. Stanst

I saw a programme on this and they said that people believed that they would have no afterlife if they were not buried in a churchyard. The clergy were out to make money and for a fee they would bury as many people as possible in their churchyard (often 4 deep). So if a chapel had no graveyard, they would be buried in the nearest place that had space (or that was cheapest). Sue:-)

The ones I am thinking of were baptised 1827-41, though I have not found their burials. I know that several moved to London. The chapel at which they were baptised no longer exists, but photos suggest it was too small for a burial ground. Wendy

Thank you Wendy. I think you are right but I hesitate because some of the christenings were very early 1800s, so I thought churches may have graveyards. linda

I have ancestors baptised "Independent" i.e Congregational in newport,Essex. I believe these were small chapels without any graveyard. Wendy

I think by the time the last one was buried they had all moved into Surrey and have not got any records for baptisms there. I live abot 60 miles from Stansted so hope to go one Sunday and have a look around and see if I can find any more clues. Thanks for your help Linda

That's quite likely. Or perhaps the family went in for a mass conversion - do they carry on being baptised in the Meeting House? nell

I have a lot of ancestors who in the 1800's were baptised in at the Old Independant meeting house Stansted but then buried in an anglican churchyard nearby. Would this be because the meeting house had no churchyard I wonder? Can anyone offer any other explanation? linda
