Can any one tell me what this means as some one's occupation.?

Hi, It's someone who doesn't have to work - he may live on income from a business or property. One of my ancestors was a master baker and had a bakery and other property. In later life was a "gentleman" and left lots of property in his will. Gwynne

It means they have independent means - ie they don't have to work for a living. nell

If you have some time to scroll back through ANthony Adolph's question sessions he answered this question for me a while back. It's very much dependent on when he was a gentleman I think i.e. if it's fairly early then chances are he was from the gentry and had land, servants etc the later it gets the more common it became to call yourself a gent if you were just lucky enough to have some money

Thanks alot now have to find of what type. This was on the 1891 census he was age 38 at the time.
