There are specific church-legal connotations to being a Parish Church. For instance, we have three churches within our parish but only one, St James' Church, is the Parish Church. In the 19th century, a number of (urban-ish) parishes were split up into two, to allow for the increase in local population. Many of them are now re-amalgamating as, with church attendance no longer being a social, or legal requirement, congregation sizes are tending to shrink. Christine

The place was probably a lot smaller then than it is now and usually if it says 'the parish church' it means there was only one church in the area. Quite a few of my ancestors had children before marriage and they still married in church, so it must have been allowed. (I think just as many people back then had children before marriage as do now). Kath. x
