Do please remember that age given on death certificate is only as reliable as the person who gave the information! Depending on who was the informant, they may not have known exactly how old she was! Wendy

Surprisingly, I just checked the IGI for the 3 years 1811-1813 inclusive and there are not that many Mary Ann Smith's born in Greater London. Going on the premise that the kids may include her mum and dad's name, there is quite a good candidate born 9 December 1811 in St Leonards Shoreditch. The date is good too. However on the census in 1851 she gave St George in the East as her birthplace.

Oh Granpa Jim, five years either way, please no, not with a name like Mary Smith.

Assuming her age is correct on both census and death certificate, remember her death could have occurred anytime from 1st July to the end of September. She could have been born between Oct 1811 and June 1812 or is it 1813. You have got my head spinning now.

I have spent ages trying to find the maiden name of my GGMx2 (no marriage record). Finally found the youngest child (but none of the others) had a birth record. Sent off for said cert - what a lucky break - mother's name is Smith (scream). Now I want to have a go at finding this Mary Ann Smith who according to the 1851 census was born in St George in the East. This is where I need the clever ones out there! She is shown aged 39 on the 1851 census in Stepney. This was taken 1 April I think. She is shown aged 55 when she died in 1867 - September quarter. Therefore am I right in thinking she must have a birth date of Jan - 31 March 1812??????????? Head is going to burst any second - please help.
