Is it normal for the bride and groom to give the same place of residence on a marriage cert in 1884? Just wondered!! Thanks Lisa

Hi, It was quite common. It saved money. If they resided in different parishes they had to pay for 2 lots of Banns to be read - if they were in the same parish only one lot of Banns. Gwynne

I didnt know that Gwynne (I dont know an awful lot!). My Great Grandad and his bride also gave same address on their cert I assumed they were living over the brush!

On my grandparents' marriage cert., they had the same address (though this was 1920's). My Aunt told me that when my Nan told her stepmother she was going to be married, stepmother was furious and told her to leave (no scandal, so just spite, I guess). So Nan went to future in-laws' place. I know this is a later period, but could it be similar circs perhaps? Just a thought. Glenys.

Lisa It's very normal. It saved having to have banns read in two separate parishes when the bride and groom weren't in the same one. See this for further info http://home*.clara*.net/dixons/Certificates/marriages*.htm#COL7 remove * first. It is a nuisance when you get a marriage cert and hope it will provide useful info to find that the address may be misleading, the bride and groom's ages may be just "of full age", the bride apparently has no occupation - when you know from the census that she did - and fathers are both alive and well when you believe they might be dead!! nell

My gg grandparents had the same address in 1854 but only the street is named, not the number.
