Mad Alice

Nan I bet she was an Allison! That was my maiden name and I have lost all trace of them before 1881, they don't appear on the census and they suddenly reappear on the 1901 Mum remarried husband apparently lost at sea ( so the story goes ....) seeing your name made me think it may be a similar case. Mad Alice was my nickname at school (from Allison) Reverted back because they are driving me craaaaaaaaazy! Linda

http://www.missing-ancestors.com - has something about such homes. Also if you 'google' industrial+home+devon OR industrial+school+devon, there are links to tell you more about that type of institution. Also try contacting the local family history society with details - they may know where to point you even if no-one actually has researched this. http://www.devonfhs.org.uk

Hi, Jan this is making me crazy???we just learned a short while back that my gran had another sister, but can't find out what happened to her. Didn't know whether this industrial housing was kind of a church or state foster home/orphange set up or whether it was just like a special school where children trained to go into domestic service? The other occupants were older in years ,came from all over england and were shown as servants/attending school. How she ended up in Devon is beyond us too. Thanks for the input, nan

Put industrial housing devon into a search engine and info like this comes up: Data gathering undertaken recently for the Cornwall and west Devon Mining World Heritage Site Bid has for the first time revealed that fully one quarter of the land surface of the County has been altered in some way or another by industrial activity. The range of impact is both diverse and extensive including: Thousands of medieval tin streams and later mines; Many quarries and china clay works; Important mineral ports and their associated industrial tramways; Foundries, smelting houses, works and factories; Industrial housing, settlements and small towns to house its workforce; Great houses and gardens created by those who became wealthy through mining and; Thousands of hectares of land taken into agriculture to feed a rapidly-expanding population
