Was he a drayman? He may not have been at home that evening. How about this one: Charles King 24 Oxon Chiselhampton Surrey Mortlake Brewer Drayman Chiselhampton is very close to Brookhampton (about 1 mile NW) and Mortlake isn't far from Twickenham - especially by horse & cart. Christine

Well we did know where they were living, that did help, was there no births that you could get that would help. Mind you with out the census details you wouldn't know if any children were born before 1901 unless its the one you are looking for. What you need to have look with a first name and no surname Charles The age 25 2 (2 years round) Place of birth try the parish if that doesn't work then the county Oxford or Oxon where they were living (if you know for sure) The other thing is did he use Charles or did he have a 2nd name he used, I have noticed on 1901 a lot put their 2nd name as 1st, whether that was the person taking the details down putting them in the wrong place I don't know but there were a few that I found. Anyway try different combinations and see what you can find. Irene

Hi I was the same as you, I knew my g grandfather was alive and he did live till 1941. Try putting their first name in and where they were born try to keep the ages small as you may get to many you will then get all the i.e. Fred's born ? aged 15 with 2 years around so 13-17 this will include all even ..... which is what they put if they can't read the name, that was my g grandfathers family. Mind you I did have the page before it came on line as I couldn't wait any longer, the writing was, well even I couldn't read it so how someone abroad could is beyond me. The other was my husbands grandparents, Dachtler came under Batchler did the same as above and found them, it was a D no way could it have been a B but it was Datchler on the census sheet.

When I found Linda Lanning listed as Nina Wall, I realised that the census had problems. This was an enumerator rather than a transcriber problem. There were so many other mistakes by this enumerator that I could recognise, that it made me wonder how many others he had made. Conversely, there must have been people who hid on census night. Don't they reckon on the 2001 census that hundreds of thousands of young men are missing? I cannot see how they could possibly have known what the population was supposed to have been in 1901 to establish what the amount of under-recording was. If they had known, after all, why go to the expense of holding a census? Brenda

Their names may have been mistranscribed Tracy, there are loads of mistakes on the 1901. It took someone else to find my Gt grandad, he was a Dowell mistranscribed as a Powell. So throw it open to all of us. Post up ya details - all of them, dates places etc - and we'll have a stab at finding them. Sioux

I was under the impression that this website is complete. However last night I spent a fortune on trying to find my grt grndfather and his family who if I didn't know better I would commence the search for their death certs as they REALLY weren't there!! I know he was still alive as he fathered my grdfather in 1909 - any ideas where to go now?? I did the usual - swap the names around incase entered the wrong way around, search on nicknames etc.......
