Thank you all so much. Of course that's the answer he was in the military. I feel so ashamed of not having thought of that. I thought I was reasonably intelligent - not. Thanks again. What a geat lot you are.

Shirli, If you go to census collection click on 1871 got to Counties: London then click on St. Botolph without Aldgate. It shows 5 enumeration districts at the end is the Tower of London there are 43 pages it must have been a very large barracks, in the description Tower Of London, Tower Hill Parliamentary borough Tower Hamlets. Your solider was stationed in the Tower and had his family with him. Pat x

It says 'district Tower of London' on the heading. On image one is a Colonel and family and the last few pages of images are soldiers, so perhaps your family were something to do with the military (or they were locked up!!). Kath. x p.s. All the heads of families seem to be soldiers so perhaps it was used as a barracks.

According to the census for 1871 on ancestory Rhodolpa Stiling was resident at St Botolph without Aldgate. I'll go back on and see if I was just carelss and not looking properly. That's all the details I have at the moment. Thank you for helping me - Shirli

Hello - Can anyone tell me if "St Botolph without Aldgate" was a workhouse. My gggrandmother is listed in the 1871 census with loads of other people. Or maybe a Hospital ? Any help would really be appreciated - Shirli.
