Local wills and land tax assessments should be in the local record office. Check with them beforehand, though. Some ROs have on-line catalogues, or information for family historians. If it's your first visit, find out whether you need to book, or prove your identity to look at the records and whether you can save time by ordering documents in advance. What survives varies from county to county. They will usually stress which of their records are most useful and readily accessible. Enjoy Brenda

Hi Heather & Brenda, Thanks for the advice!! I'm about to look on the A2A site, then planning a visit to the glos RO. I presume that the records, like tax records, are in the county records offices?? Many thanks again Paula

What period, Wifey? If they are wealthy, they'll be paying for substitutes so they don't have to serve in the militia. Wealthy people are good. They pay taxes: they appear in records. 1780 -1832 (exact survival rates vary from county to countyand some start earlier, some end later) for Land Tax Assessments. These show owners and occupiers of land, organised by parish. Wills, as Heather has said. Pre 1858, PCC wills are online. These are the really wealthy and the problem wills. Most wills are in county record offices, though there are lots of indexes in print or online. Try A2A (type into Google) and search that site. All sorts of miscellaneous references may come up. The wealthy often married by licence. Lots of indexes have been published. That's a few ideas, there are lots more sources. Brenda

You could get their Wills to have a look through. If before 1850 I think they can be downloaded from National Archives for about £3.50 a go. If before, like mine, I had to write to York for them to be sent by post.

I've just discovered that hubby's grandparents were quite a wealthy lot!! (the money didn't come to us!). Does anyone out there have any advice on finding out more info. I've read people saying about tithe records, militia, and other bits and bobs, but don't really know much about any of them. Any help and suggestions will be most gratefully recieved!!
