I would think the first thing to do is to locate a marriage or possible marriages. Up to Mid 1911 this will be hard finding the partners, but after 1911 you will be able to find the partners surname in the indexing along side the name you are looking for. Once you have this you will then be able to search the birth indexing for any children. Also from Mid 1911 in the Birth indexing the mothers maiden name was included. Once you have reach the 1920 (1928 for women over 21) you will be able to search the Electoral Roll Books. If its possible to get the odd certificate you will have an address this will help knowning where to search. Before WW1 the Elect. books do not have many as voting right were not alway taken up as the older men couldn't read and write, women over a certain age (believe its around 60) did have the vote, 1923 men over 21 had the vote. So it is possible if you have the time to trace forward. It just takes a bit longer and a bit more money making sure you are right. Good Luck Irene

Hi Avril As you probably know tracing forward from 1901 is more difficult than going backwards. Do they have an unusual surname and do you know which area they were born in? You could look on the records office board for anyone volunteering 192 look ups. They could give you the names and addresses of poeple with that surname in that area. You could then drop them a line on the offchance that their descendants still live in the same area. Our local newspaper has a section on things that happened in the area in the past. Perhaps the paper local to that area has one too. You could post an article in the newspaper asking if anyone remembers the family. You could also post a trying to find message on this site. Hope this helps. Jeanette x

I think the only way is to trawl through the GRO index whether at a library, records office or online at 1837.
