marriage certificate

Could someone advise me please - do you have to know exact date of marriage to order uk certificate? or can i get away with just a year? been onto gro.gov.uk/content/certificate/index.asp but it asks for ddmmyyyy.Can i make up ddmm? and still get certificate? thanks for any help judy (melb)

Hi Judy I think the GRO will seach a year for you but they will charge more. Don't make it up, they will just come back to you and tell you they have found nothing in the date you specify. Have you looked on www.freebmd.org.uk? It is possible the marriage will be on here and if so it will give you the reference. If you can't find it in Freebmd then Your best bet is to post the year and names on the records board and ask for someone with a spare credit to 1837online or access to ancestry to look up the reference for you. if you are ordering online you just need the quarter & GRO number & volume. & year. Any extra isn't necessary

If you know which local office it is, then they only use the year. (It's easier if you can find out their reference - some have online search sites partially completed.) Fees are the same as GRO. Christine
