where do I go before 1837

can anyone please give me any advice on where to start looking for relatives prior to 1837. elaine:))

Start with what you know from post-1837. Hopefully you will have some bmd certs and census entries. These will have names and places. Then look at www.familysearch.org - this has the IGI (International Genealogical Index) on it. This is not complete and not always accurate, but it will give a pointer to your relatives. Then you need to follow up the info (mainly baptism and marriage references) in the original church indexes in the relevant local records offices. Records offices have a lot of info which isn't always easy to find, including parish records, information about settlements, poor relief etc. Take a look at the Getting Started section on this website for other ideas.
