Ancestry clearly state that they use the FreeBMD database, but they don't give any clue as to how quickly updates of FreeBMD are transferred to Ancestry's system. FreeBMD these days often runs at a snails pace, it will only return results based on the exact names but it does allow a date range to be entered. Ancestry runs pretty fast most of the time, it returns results with first and middle names (very useful where people often swapped their names) but it only allows fixed dates. Make use of the free access to Ancestry censuses etc before they pull the plug !
