There have been several similar posts recently and the advice is take it slow. Think about what you want to achieve. Can you take the rejection if he does not want to know. Think about him. Would his new family be upset There was a very good program on radio 4 the other day talking about the pitfalls of contacting parents of thoes who had been adopted. Has this chap ever known you? I suppose that if you do decide to go ahead, then a simple letter stating who you are, that you are looking for your father who has a similar name to his, and a brief explanation of why you want to get intouch. I knew one lady who thought the child of her husband was after his money!! Have you discussed this with the rest of your family? Take care Jeanie

I am pretty certain there is already a thread about adoptees, which deals with similar scenarios, of meeting a parent for the first time. Try searching for a phrase such as "tracing parent" or "adoption", (even if that isn't exactly your situation) in the box above the messages, other people's ideas/wanings/experiences might already be on here. Good luck, Carole

Hi everyone, Well I joined this website about a week ago wanting to look for my father. I went onto a website called MyFolks which was recommended to me, and I got a reply today and I've actually got an address for my father. This has happened alot quicker than I was expecting, I am excited and I want to write to him, but I am really not sure what to write. I can't even start it off, do I go straight into it and say Hi, I'm your daughter????? Any advice or if anyone has gone through this before and can tell me what to do then that would be great!!!! Hope to hear from someone soon! Lisa
